

Dr. Canady received his BA (German) from Villanova University and Doctorate of
Medicine from Temple University. He completed his general surgery residency
at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center at Mckeesport, McKeesport, PA.
Prior to starting his postgraduate fellowships
Dr. Canady was a staff surgeon
in general surgery at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C.. Dr.
Canady completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Organ Transplantation & Immunology
at Yale University School of Medicine and a Clinical Fellowship in Organ Transplantation
at Yale - New Haven Hospital under the guidance of Professor and Chief of Transplantation
Marc Lorber, M.D. As part of the Yale program Dr. Canady had the honor to be
accepted as a clinical fellow in the prestigious department of Visceral and
Organ Transplantation, Virchow Klinikum Humboldt Universitaet of Berlin under
the supervision of world renowned Herr Professor and Chief Peter Neuhaus, M.D..
After Berlin he completed an Advanced Multivisceral & Intestinal Transplantation
(Adult & Pediatric) at the University of
Pittsburgh Medical Center, Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute and Childrens
Hospital of Pittsburgh @ UPMC under the guidance of Professor & Chief of Transplantation
John Fung, M.D., PhD, Jorges Reyes, M.D. (Professor & Chief of Pediatric Transplantation)
and distinguished Professor of Transplantation and Pioneer Thomas Starzl, M.D.,
PhD.
Upon completion of his fellowship at Pittsburgh he returned to Humboldt Universitaet of Berlin and worked with Dr. Neuhaus and his surgical team as a visiting surgeon. While in Berlin Dr. Canady concentrated on the surgical treatment and management of complex tumors of the liver, pancreas, bile ducts, gastrointestinal tract and multiple organ transplantation (Liver, Pancreas, Kidney and Intestine). In addition Dr. Canady was a visiting surgeon at Kyoto University, Department of Surgery/Transplantation Kyoto, Japan and he worked with the world renowned transplant surgeon Koichi Tanaka, M.D.. Dr. Tanaka is noted for his pioneering work in living donor liver transplantation.
Dr. Canady is a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery (2000) and recertified by the American Board of Surgery (2008). He is also certified by the American Society of Transplant Surgeons for his fellowships at the Yale University School of Medicine (2001) and University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (2002). Dr. Canady is considered an innovator and clinical expert in the use of argon plasma coagulation (Canady Plasma™) during endoscopic and surgical procedures. He was the first in the world to received patents from US Patent & Trademark Office and European Patent Office for the development of the Argon Plasma Coagulator Catheter (Canady Plasma™ Probe) for flexible endoscopy. In addition he has received multiple US Patents for innovative inventions in argon plasma coagulation technology. Dr. Canady has extensive experience in the surgical cytoreduction of tumors, surgical removal of complex tumors of the liver, bile duct, pancreas, liver, stomach and stage IV gastrointestinal tumors with the plasma beam.
Dr. Canady is noted for the surgical removal of complex stage IV gastrointestinal tumors when the patients were told that their tumors were inoperable by other surgeons. Dr. Canady utilizes the guidance of 3 dimensional imaging and mapping via CT scan in the operating room as well as a plasma beam to remove complex tumors of the liver, bile duct, pancreas and gastrointestinal tract. Dr. Canady is the first to successfully removed a stage IV intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (75-80% of the liver) in a complex two stage liver technique which he developed.
